Writing It Right

8 Feb 2011:

After some research and consideration, the issue on using "to" or "than" in the recent Grammar cloze passage exercise has been resolved.

According to Collins Cobuild English Dictionary for Advance Learners and The Encartar Concise English Dictionary, the usage of "to" is listed under "prefer...to".

E.g.  He prefers climbing to swimming.
They prefer cooking to doing dishes.

As for "than", it is used together with "rather".

E.g.  He would rather choose climbing than swimming.
They would rather cook than do dishes. or
They would cook rather than do dishes.

In conclusion, we'll prefer using "to" whenever we see "prefer".
